Psychiatrist Robert Kohn, MD, has treated elderly people and individuals with developmental disabilities. In addition, Dr. Robert Kohn has contributed to studies that discuss the impacts of leaving mental disorders untreated.

Mental disorders impose a significant socioeconomic burden because they contribute to low educational attainment, poor work performance and low motivation to work, workplace discrimination, lower incomes, and impairment in personal functions. They also increase the rate of poverty, as some lost their jobs due to the challenges of mental disorders.

From an employer’s perspective, people battling mental problems tend to be absent from their places of work, reducing productivity and revenue. Mental illnesses also result in presenteeism, the action of attending the workplace while suffering from an ongoing mental illness. The financial burden of presenteeism could be four times higher compared to absenteeism. Other sources of economic burden from mental disorders include treatment costs and expenditures on social support.

A Providence, Rhode Island-based psychiatrist with more than four decades of experience in geriatric psychiatry, Dr. Robert Kohn received his MD from the University of Illinois in Chicago and subsequently went on to complete his residency in psychiatry at Brown University. Since 2017 Dr. Robert Kohn has operated his own private practice in Providence, where he provides treatment for geriatric patients suffering from mental disorders.

Even as mental health awareness and activism gain traction, there are still significant obstacles to overcome. Individuals and families of those in need of mental health care, sadly, are the ones who face the biggest difficulties. Social stigma is one of these issues. The discrimination of a person based on perceivable social features that practically separate them from other members of a society is known as social stigma. It's a sort of label that links a person to a series of unapproved qualities that constitute a stereotype. Many mental health illnesses present with noticeable signs that cause the public to stigmatize those suffering from them.

Stigmas exacerbate the embarrassment experienced by those suffering from mental illnesses, to the point that they will refuse to seek treatment because of shame. One-third of Americans are concerned that people will judge them if they confess that they have sought mental health treatment. Furthermore, 21 percent of Americans are not reluctant to lie if this would cover up the fact that they were seeking mental health treatment.

As a result of social stigma, many avoid or postpone getting essential mental health therapy. As a result, the mental illness continues untreated and this may lead to feelings of isolation, a drop in self-esteem, and other bad repercussions, such as self-medicating with alcohol and drugs, which can lead to co-occurring illnesses. Many adults cannot sustain their work and social relationships in this state.
